Continuing Bonds Rituals: Finding Ways to Stay Connected

Staying connected to the person you love — whether you’re caring for them now or carrying them with you after loss — and how The Balance Path™ can help.

Many of us grew up hearing that grief is something to “get over.” That healing requires letting go, packing things away, and moving on. But anyone who has loved and lost knows something fundamentally different: the love doesn’t end when a life does. You still talk to them in the quiet of the car. You still set out their favorite mug on their birthday. You still hear their advice when you face a hard decision: “What would they say?”

At Luna Sol Wellbeing, we want to say it plainly: You don’t have to let go to heal. You can carry the people you love with you, and still build a full, meaningful life.

What Are Continuing Bonds?

“Continuing bonds” is a concept grief researchers identified to describe what human beings have done for centuries: staying emotionally, spiritually, and practically connected to someone who has died. Instead of treating that connection as being “stuck,” continuing bonds recognizes it as love finding a new, enduring form.

Why Rituals Matter

  • Give love a place to go: Grief is often unexpressed love that has nowhere to land. A ritual gives it a time, a place, and a shape.
  • Speak directly to the senses: A familiar song, an aroma, a worn sweater, or a favorite family meal reaches the heart faster than words can.
  • Anchor the hardest days: Birthdays, holidays, and anniversaries can feel overwhelming. A planned ritual provides a comforting anchor.
  • Transform private grief into shared remembrance: Shared rituals bring family and friends together in honor of the person.

Continuing Bonds on The Balance Path™

Phase 1: Relax — Rituals of Comfort

Small, gentle moments that ask nothing of you except presence.

A Gentle Ritual: A Moment for the Senses
Choose one sensory reminder: a song they loved, a familiar scent, a framed photo, or their watch. Sit quietly with it for five minutes. Breathe slowly and let whatever feelings arise simply be there without judgment.

Phase 2: Restore — Rituals of Conversation

Few things restore us like being able to speak what is in our hearts.

A Gentle Ritual: Keep Talking
Write to them in a dedicated journal, or speak to them out loud on a morning walk. Tell them about your day, what you miss, and the questions you wish you could ask. Many find surprising peace in keeping that conversation alive.

Phase 3: Rebuild — Their Ways, Your Hands

The people we love leave indelible fingerprints on how we cook, garden, laugh, and see the world.

A Gentle Ritual: Carrying Forward Their Tradition
Cook their signature recipe on a special evening. Tend the plants they cared for. Keep a family tradition they started, or set up a dedicated remembrance corner in your home with photos and cherished objects.

Phase 4: Rise — Rituals of Legacy and Love

Rise is where your bond transforms into something meaningful you offer to the world.

A Gentle Ritual: Love in Action
Do something tangible in their honor: volunteer for a cause they cared about, plant a memorial tree, make a donation, or establish a joyful annual gathering on their birthday.

Planning for the Hard Days

Anniversaries, birthdays, and holidays can bring grief rushing back in waves. That isn’t a setback — it is the natural spiral of healing. Decide ahead of time how you want to spend the day, choose one comforting ritual (like lighting a candle or visiting a meaningful place), and give yourself complete permission to change the plan if your heart needs something else.

A Note from Our Founder

“When my wife of 20 years, Kelly, passed away at home on June 6, 2020, her music was playing, her aromatherapy blend was in the air, and her pets were at her side. Today, I keep a dedicated space in my office for Kelly with her ashes, photos, and mementos. I also had a tree planted with a stone inscribed: ‘Kelly Holt-Berrios 9/28/59 – 6/6/20: Taught Us How To Live a Life Worth Living’ at a community park where we walked our dogs. The love does not end when a life does. I created The Balance Path™ so that caregivers and grievers can carry the people they love with them and still find their way forward.”

— Alex Berrios Sr., Founder, Luna Sol Wellbeing
